The Lily
The lily, from the genus Lilium, is one of the world’s most revered and dramatic flowering plants, admired for its luminous colours, sculptural petals, and intoxicating fragrance.
Lilies bloom in pristine white, blush pink, fiery orange, golden yellow, crimson, deep maroon and speckled bi-colours, each hue rich with symbolism. White lilies are long associated with purity, renewal and spiritual devotion; pink expresses admiration and prosperity; orange symbolises confidence and passion; yellow conveys gratitude and joy; while darker tones evoke mystery and transformation.
Ethnobotanically, lilies have been cultivated for more than 3,000 years across Asia, the Middle East and Europe. They appear in ancient Egyptian art, Greek mythology, Christian iconography, and East Asian medicine. In traditional Chinese herbal practice, lily bulbs (particularly Lilium brownii) were valued as nourishing, moistening foods used to calm the spirit and support respiratory and digestive health.
Across cultures, lilies have also symbolised rebirth, motherhood, remembrance and sacred femininity. Prized globally, the lily captivates not only for its elegance and fragrance, but for its architectural beauty, ecological importance to pollinators, and its ability to embody both delicacy and strength standing tall, luminous and resilientmaking it an enduring emblem of grace, transformation and the profound beauty of the natural world.
