The rose
The rose from the genus Rosa, is among the most cherished flowers in the world, celebrated for its extraordinary spectrum of colours—crimson red, blush pink, golden yellow, ivory white, coral, apricot, lavender, and even near-black burgundy each shade carrying its own symbolic language.
Red roses evoke deep love and passion; white symbolises purity and remembrance; yellow conveys friendship and joy; pink suggests admiration and grace; and darker hues hint at mystery or farewell.
Ethnobotanically, roses have been treasured for over 5,000 years, cultivated in ancient Persia, Greece, Rome, China, and later across Europe for medicine, perfume, cuisine, and ritual.
Rose petals and hips were used in traditional herbal systems for their soothing, anti-inflammatory and vitamin-rich properties, while rose oil and rose water became central to cultural ceremonies, cosmetics, and healing preparations.
Beyond symbolism and utility, the rose is prized globally for its layered fragrance, intricate petal geometry, ecological value to pollinators, and its unique ability to embody both beauty and thorns passion and protection making it an enduring emblem of love, resilience, artistry.
